本日のエントリはiKnow!日記からの転載。

語源を知っておくと、たくさんの英単語を覚えるのが容易になる、というのはiKnow!やってる人っちなら知ってると思う。

たとえば、"return" だったら、

1. "re" は "back" を意味する
2. "turn" は古いフランス語 "torner" （意味は "to turn"）に由来する

… とかね。

この手の記述は手持ちの研究社の「新英和中辞典」にちょこっと載ってるけど、情報量が少ないし、字が小さいし、なんとかならんのか（怒）、とかねがね思っていた。
で、Amazonで見かけた某有名な高額本（中古本なので、ちょっと安い）を買おうかな、と密かにもくろんでいるんだけど、オンラインの辞書でも英語の語源を扱ったものはある。「語源辞典：スペースアルク」とかね。

英単語の意味と語源は英語で覚えろ、とよく言われる。じゃあ、英語で英語の語源を解説したオンラインの辞典を探してみようってんで、探してみた。

iKnow!日記の中をググってみたら、こんなの見つけたけど、うーん、使い方がいまいちわかんない …

iKnow!ユーザを当てにせず、独力で探す。

- Online Etymology Dictionary

調べたい単語（複数でもOK）の右隣りにあるドロップダウンリストには "Find single term", "Natural Language", "Find any term", "Find exact phrase" という項目がある。
これを "Find single term" にした状態でWebブラウザ用の検索エンジンを自作しちゃえば、もう完璧ではなかろうか。

Operaなら、search.iniに以下の記述を追加（本当は、自動的に生成されるんだけの話なんですが）。

Firefoxの場合は、OpenSearchFoxというextensionを使えば、searchpluginsフォルダに「なんとか.xml」というファイルを容易に生成できる。この「なんとか.xml」が Online Etymology Dictionary の検索エンジン。

まあ、Firefoxの場合、"smart keyword" と呼ばれる裏技（これはOperaの技をパクったものである、という有名な逸話あり）があるので、わざわざOpenSearchFoxなんて使う必要はないとも言えるんだけど。

Online Etymology Dictionary のIntroductionを少し引用しとくか。

Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant 600 or 2,000 years ago. Think of it like looking at pictures of your friends' parents when they were your age. People will continue to use words as they will, finding new or wider meanings for old words and coining new ones to fit new situations. In fact, this list is a testimony to that process.

この中の "coining new ones to fit new situations" というフレーズが気になった。
"coining" what?

さっそく coin を Online Etymology Dictionary で調べてみたけど、よくわかんない。知りたいのは語源ではなく、意味と例文なので、こういうときは英辞郎。

「英辞郎 on the Web：スペースアルク」によると、coin には他動詞として「新しいことばをつくる」という意味があるんだとか。
スペースアルクの利用規約に反するかもしれないけど、ちょっとだけ引用。

Herbert Spencer coined the phrase "survival of the fittest."
The term was coined from Latin.

というわけで、結局、英辞郎のお世話になってしまった。
